Hatha Yoga

Very often, when we speak about “yoga” we are referring to Hatha Yoga. Hatha is a type of yoga focused on physical postures (asanas), along with breath (pranayama) and meditation. The practice of Hatha Yoga can help you recognize your hidden physical and mental potentials. Through the continued performance of asanas, you will gain flexibility and strength, and learn to be more relaxed under otherwise stressful situations. Hatha Yoga tries to achieve balance between body and mind, and it will help you put your mind in a focused state to prepare for meditation. Some of our teachers offer a style that is more Vinyasa, or flow, influenced, while others focus on alignment. We offer a variety of Hatha Yoga levels to best suit your needs.

Level 1 (Beginner)

With a focus on alignment, Lighthouse’s Level 1 classes offer students a solid foundation on which to build their practice. The class combines warm-ups, gentle postures and yogic breathing to increase mobility and reduce stress. This is an excellent choice for people who are in the early stages of exploring Hatha yoga, as well as more experienced students who are looking for a less intense experience.

Mixed Level Hatha

The mixed level classes offer something for everyone. Classes will begin with warm ups and basic postures, and for students who have achieved a degree of comfort in their Hatha practice, these classes offer the opportunity to explore more challenging asanas (postures). Students are encouraged to work at their own pace, and special attention is paid to the principles of alignment. Classes may include pranayama (yogic breathing) and meditation.

Advance Your Asana

This is a fun class geared for students who are comfortable in a mixed level class and who are looking to advance their practice. Lighthouse is proud to showcase senior instructors in this class who can assist students as well as yoga teachers in finding ease in advanced postures. You’re encouraged to find your own edge and build your strength and ability at your own pace. Expect some challenges as well as plenty of laughs.

Kundalini Yoga and Meditation

Lighthouse is DC’s only studio dedicated to the teaching of Kundalini Yoga as Taught by Yogi Bhajan. Kundalini is a powerful technology that combines posture, breathing, chanting and meditation to uplift and empower. Classes are mixed levels and open to all. The goal is not perfection, but rather to allow yourself to experience this powerful healing practice. You can learn more about Kundalini Yoga here.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga is an all-levels practice that emphasizes relaxation and rejuvenation. Students enjoy long holds in postures while being completely supported by bolsters, blankets and blocks. This practice allows your nervous system to calm and your mind to clear. Classes are accessible to all body types and can usually be modified for pregnancy or injuries.

Yoga Fundamentals

Yoga Fundamentals is offered as a 6-week series and is recommended for a student who has little or no experience in yoga. You will be introduced to some of the basic concepts of Hatha yoga and explore gentle asanas (postures) and pranayama (yogic breathing). It’s also a nice refresher class for those who would like to go back to the basics to jump-start your practice.

Align and Flow

In this alignment-based yoga class, we focus on form without giving up the fluid movement of flow. Students explore a progression of yoga poses that combines thoughtful alignment work and longer holds with playful vinyasa flow that will challenge any level of student, improving strength, flexibility, and balance.

Flow and Release

Move through a meditative sequence of poses to detoxify and open the entire body and finish with a luxurious restorative pose (think resting weightlessly on a cloud of props and blankets) with hands on adjustment and massage (optional) to help you let go of stress and anxiety held in the body and relax completely. This class offers moderate and intermediate options in poses and is appropriate for students of all levels who would like to enjoy the benefits of a more easeful mind and body.
