Baby & Me Yoga (6 weeks to almost crawling)

New Day! This class is moving to Fridays! The next 7-week series will start on October 13, 12:15-1:15 pm. No class on October 27, but see details below for a special opportunity that day for new parents.

Current series ends on September 28

Drop-in $20/class. Full 7-week series: $115–register for all 7 classes and save!

Inspired by the Itsy Bitsy yoga model, most of the “yoga” is for the baby, but each week we take time to introduce breathing/relaxation techniques and include some gentle yoga moves for caregiver as well.

Most appropriate from 6-weeks postpartum until baby is mobile. No previous yoga experience necessary. Please bring a receiving blanket and maybe a small toy each week. Also note that babies are always welcome in this space where sleeping, feeding, and even crying are legitimate ways to participate in class, so please bring whatever else you need to be comfortable.

Please note that we don’t offer make-up sessions for this class. We keep our pricing as affordable as we can, and we thank you for your understanding that in order to remain this affordable, we aren’t able to accommodate schedule shifting or make ups.

October 13-December 8. No class on October 27 or November 24. To sign up for the full 7-week series, purchase the “Baby and Me” class card here.

Special event on October 27: Tour of Lincoln’s Cottage

Lisa Watkins, one of our LHY yogis, has organized a special private tour of Lincoln’s Cottage for Petworth Parents!
Please join other new parents to tour Lincoln’s Cottage, a historic site and museum right in the heart of Petworth, where President Lincoln lived and worked for a significant part of his presidency.  A group tour just for us and our little ones will take place on Friday, October 27, at 11:30am.  It’ll  be a discounted rate of $12.50 per adult for us (no charge for the babies!) – please bring cash/check payment (and Lisa, who is coordinating the outing, will make a payment to the Cottage for the whole group).  To sign up, please email Lisa directly:
Two things to note are: 1) they do not allow strollers in the Cottage because the doorways are too narrow. However, we can park strollers outside the Cottage for convenience (so you may want to bring a carrier as well to wear your baby during the tour – there will also be places to sit in some rooms, and the tours generally last about an hour); 2) You must bring ID, such as a drivers license, to enter the grounds.  The entrance is at the intersection of Rock Creek Church Road and Upshur St, and we’ll meet at the Visitors Center:

What people are saying:

“Meredith is absolutely awesome, and Eliana and I have really enjoyed her class. I really credit Meredith and the class for giving me strength and reassurance during maternity leave. I was pretty frazzled when I started with my then 5-week old baby!” M.Y. 9/29/16

“Thanks again for a great class. E and H were both so delighted, and so happy to get out and move on a cold day. I really appreciate the gift of being able to watch E develop through her changing interaction with the class content and kids over the now almost two years! We really treasure the unplugged quality family time and I’m so glad it continues.”  Z.S. 1/9/17

Meredith McCullough Bio

meredithMeredith began her own yoga practice over 15 years ago – first to get a little exercise and later to try to find sanity and balance despite a stressful job as a consultant. She stuck with yoga thanks to a welcoming and vibrant yoga community. Early in her practice she was drawn to an alignment-based school of teaching, connecting to a clear and thoughtful way of articulating poses, an invitation to participate fully and creatively in everyday life, and the fact that laughter on the mat was not only tolerated, but encouraged. She has continued to grow and share her love of the practice ever since. When her first son was born in 2013, she started to take infant, then toddler classes, and her family has continued the journey together. Meredith carries a sense of playfulness into her classes for both children and grownups, and is excited to share with students of all ages the joys and challenges that yoga reveals both on and off the mat.

Meredith is grateful to all her teachers along her path, particularly alignment-based instructors Desiree Rumbaugh, Christina Sell and Ross Rayburn who have influenced and inspired her. She completed her first teacher training at Willow Street Yoga (Takoma, MD) in 2006, followed by Level 1 and 2 Teacher Training intensives with Amy Ippoliti and therapeutics with Amy, Ross, and Jenny Otto. In addition, Meredith has completed teacher trainings for infants and children through ChildLight Yoga, LilOmm, and Tranquil Space. Meredith is the co-author of The Seven Women Project, which she wrote with her mother Karen McCullough. Meredith continues to practice with and learn from her teachers, friends, and family. She just can’t get enough yoga play time!

Babysitting for Daytime Classes

We offer occasional babysitting for our Friday 9:30 am classes. Reservations are required, either by email or by registering online.

The introductory rate for babysitting is $5/class per child. Petworth Parent Rose Riggs will be at the studio with toys and games for your little ones. You’ll be attending class in the next room, so if rose profile2__1444846027_71.114.76.28there are any problems, questions, or concerns, you’ll be on the other side of the door.

If you’re already purchasing a drop in class, just add the babysitting charge onto your pass. If you already have a class card, you can pay the $5 in cash when you come to the studio. (Please note that if you use your class card, it will deduct the childcare from your regular classes. That’s fine, but you may end up with an odd number of credits on your account!). Either way, you must reserve in advance by emailing us or paying online!

Babysitting guidelines:

  • Children must be healthy
  • Out of respect for all children in the group, please do not bring in any food or drink.
  • The babysitter will ask the parent to step out of the class for crying or distressed children. We want your children to feel safe & supported, and will not allow children to cry for extended periods.
  • Please ALWAYS take your child to the bathroom/change diapers before class starts.  We will ask you to step out of class if your child needs to go.  Remember to bring extra diapers and wipes 🙂
  • All soiled diapers must be removed from the studio immediately (they can be set outside the front door until the end of class).
  • Childcare is limited to 5 children.
  • Please remember we are a yoga studio, and not a daycare center.  We want to make this an enjoyable experience for all, while honoring the practice of our community.

We use chants, finger plays, dance and movement activities in a playful, relaxed environment.
