Workshop for Pelvic Floor Health

A workshop for anyone curious about strengthening or restoring your pelvic health.

The pelvic floor is one of the most under discussed and misunderstood (yet one of the single most important) muscular groups in the body. It is the set of core muscles that control sexual function and elimination. The pelvic floor also holds our organs inside our body in place.

But a lot of us don’t give a thought to those muscles until there is a problem. We spend a lot of time avoiding talking about “down there”, even with our own health care practitioners, much to our peril. Many people are surprised to find out that problems with the pelvic floor are not limited to women who have just given birth, and that the cure to pelvic floor issues is not simply to do some “kegels”.

Just as it is with the complex muscles of the hips or shoulders, any one of the muscles in the pelvic floor could be contributing to a problem. And just as all of us are different, with different experiences, those muscles have different issues across a broad spectrum.

 

Like any other muscle group, the pelvic floor is at risk of being both overly tight as well as being overly loose in both men and women of any age. Overly tight pelvic floor muscles, just like overly loose muscles, can contribute to incontinence, pain, organ prolapse and sexual dysfunction. Trauma and anxiety, the effects of which are often held in the body, can also contribute to these issues.

This workshop is about bringing mind-body awareness to that part of the body, demystifying and “de-ickying” it, and helping you to identify why you may have pain or dysfunction. We will use yogic tools, such as breath work, meditation, posture and asana practice, to not only understand our pelvic anatomy and how issues arise. We then work towards learning how to relieve those issues, and/or just bring better overall health, both in suppleness and strength, to this set of muscles.

No yoga experience necessary – just bring an open mind and a willingness to talk/hear about this part of the body within a mixed group.

About Rebecca Henry

Rebecca’s journey with yoga and meditation began more than twenty years ago when she took precepts with the Zen Buddhist Society of Compassionate Wisdom, finding that a vigorous yoga practice was the only way to keep her chattering mind quiet on her meditation mat. As those practices expanded into helping her with the stresses of school, and, later, work and family life, she has been exploring the benefits of her practice on and off the mat ever since. Forever a student, she brings a beginners mind and an awakened heart to her practice and teaching. Compassion, empathy, humor and joy are at the core of all of her classes. Her focus is on alignment and mindful movement with breath in both a traditional hatha as well as vinyasa style.

Rebecca completed her RYT-200 training at Willow Street Yoga in Takoma Park, MD, and an 85 hour Yoga Alliance pre and post natal yoga teacher training with Debra Flashenburg of the Prenatal Yoga Center of New York City. As a mother of two young boys, she is impassioned to support other women in their journey into motherhood through the mindfulness and body centered practices of yoga and meditation. As birth and postpartum doula, she emphasizes childbirth education and body awareness in her prenatal classes, bringing these practical aspects together with a warm, nurturing teaching style.
